Prairie Hike

June 22, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Prairie Hike
Saturday, June 22nd from 10:00am to 12:00pm
Join fellow hikers on a 2.0-mile long group Prairie Hike along the Mecan River segment of the Ice Age Trail with lovely topography and a vista of the Mecan Springs area. Enjoy a mid-morning exploration led by prairie enthusiast, John Shillinglaw, as we meander through savannah, and a prairie restoration area with plenty of spiderwort, leadplant, dotted mint, indian, and big and little bluestem grass and other forbs in bloom. A healthy activity the whole family can participate in right here in Waushara County!
About John: John Shillinglaw has been an avid supporter of the Ice Age Trail since 1972 and a Waushara County Chapter member for 15 years. In 1984, he purchased property on the Mecan River segment and became highly interested in restoration of dry prairie, especially for Karner blue butterflies. John also received the Leopold Foundation Henry Green award, in 2013, for his innovative approach in restoration, presented by the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.
We will meet at the Ice Age Trail parking lot on Buttercup Drive, one half mile west of 7th Avenue, and hike south to the Mecan headwaters parking lot with a shuttle back. Watch for the event signs.
This is the first of three extra guided summer hikes planned for the #WalktheWaush Challenge or join us just for the fun! We recommend wearing long pants and sturdy shoes. Bring a water bottle, bug spray and a friend! We will go rain or shine.
Hosted by the Waushara County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance. For more information contact Randy Lennartz at lennartz@centurytel.net or (920) 787-2333.
